Grace: The Gift We Can Only Receive

Grace: The Gift We Can Only Receive

We all know the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. It’s often told as a story of rebellion and return, of wandering and homecoming. But tucked into the story is another powerful lesson—one we sometimes overlook.

The older son never allowed himself to experience his father’s grace. He worked tirelessly, trying to earn what was already his. Instead of resting in his father’s love, he lived in constant striving, believing he had to deserve what was always freely given.

Isn’t that how we often live? We think if we pray harder, serve more, or live “just right,” then maybe God will bless us. But grace doesn’t work that way. Grace is received, never achieved.

To receive the grace of God, we have to be still and surrender.

Picture a drowning person. The more they fight, flail, and resist, the harder it is for the rescuer to save them. Only when they stop struggling can the rescuer hold on and bring them to safety.

That’s us with God. As long as we’re resisting—trying to earn His favor, prove ourselves, or control the outcome—we miss the chance to truly experience His saving grace. But when we let go, when we stop striving and simply trust, He carries us to safety.

Grace doesn’t just save us—it invites us into intimacy with God. It whispers, “You don’t have to work for my love. You already have it. Just receive it.”

Maybe today you’re tired of striving. Maybe you feel like the older brother—always working, but never resting in what’s already yours. Friend, hear this truth: God’s grace is not a prize to be earned, but a gift to be embraced.

Be still. Stop struggling. Let Him take hold of you.

And in that surrender, you’ll discover what the older son missed—true intimacy with the Father, and the joy of living fully in His grace.
